GEHA health plan members can purchase prescription drugs through the Medco By Mail pharmacy or at a participating retail pharmacy.

Your costs for medication are determined by:

  1. What plan option you choose. Prescription copayments are different for GEHA Standard Option, Health Savings AdvantageSM and High Option health plans. Click here for Standard Option Benefits, Health Savings Advantage or High Option Benefits.
  2. Where you buy your medication. You can purchase medications through Medco By Mail or through participating Retail Pharmacies.
  3. What type of medication you take. You save money when you take generic drugs. Click here for Information About Generics.

GEHA's High Option plan includes a three-tier prescription benefit, with a different copay or coinsurance for generic, single-source brand-name and multi-source brand-name prescriptions. Click here to view a list of commonly prescribed multi-source brand-name medications, which have generic equivalents available. Please note, this is not a complete list of multi-source medications. If you do not find your medication on the list, you may want to consult with your physician or pharmacist, as using generics results in the lowest cost to you and GEHA.

You may also save money by using preferred drugs from the Medco Drug Formulary. For example, brand-name drugs may have generic versions that may have lower copayments. Go to Preferred Prescriptions® for information and to access a formulary list of medications.

Certain specialty drugs which are injected or infused are subject to copayments. Please refer to the GEHA Plan Brochure for complete information. Click for a list of GEHA's current Specialty Medications.

More and more health care providers will be using electronic prescriptions (e-prescribing) in the coming years. For more on this trend and how it can affect your health care, read "Tipping point beckons for e-prescriptions" from Medco.
