GEHA is offering a free online program to our health members who need to lose 30 or more pounds, or any member who has been diagnosed with a condition that is either caused or made worse by being overweight.
The following conditions can be improved through weight loss:
- Type 2 diabetes,
- Metabolic syndrome,
- High blood pressure,
- High cholesterol/high lipids, or
- Obstructive sleep apnea
Losing just 5 percent to 7 percent of your current weight will lower your risk and improve your health.

If you are more than 30 pounds overweight OR you have any of the above conditions, you might be eligible for GEHA's online weight loss program – Virtual Lifestyle Management™ (VLM).

VLM was developed by doctors and weight-loss experts, and has been helping people lose weight and keep it off since 2006. The program consists of 16 weekly online lessons followed by eight monthly lessons. You will spend one full year learning how to better understand and overcome your own barriers to losing weight, learn and practice proper nutrition, and develop effective ways to gradually and safely increase your physical activity.
Throughout the year-long program and for as long as you want to continue accessing the online tools, you will track your fat and calories with an online food-tracker and plan and track your physical activities.
Most important, you will receive daily emails with reminders, guidance and support from an experienced and skilled coach who will be your guide and ally on the path to better health. Once a week, your coach will review your activities and progress and then send a personalized support message to you. You can email your coach anytime you need assistance or direction.

You can also join other GEHA members in online chat sessions where you can exchange suggestions and learn about how others have overcome their barriers to living a healthier lifestyle.
Using VLM is simple and intuitive. You will spend about 3 to 5 minutes per day tracking activities, and about 30 minutes once each week for four months, and then 30 minutes every month for the rest of the year, to complete lessons, reflect on your progress and plan your next week's activities.
There are many advantages to joining the online VLM program. There is no driving or attending meetings! You only need access to a computer with high-speed Internet service and audio capabilities. The program is full of tools to help monitor and track your success. Each week you'll work through interactive, multimedia lessons to help you gain knowledge and skills needed to successfully learn new healthy behaviors.
