GEHA will cover at-home over-the-counter COVID-19 tests

GEHA | January 14, 2022

Medical members can submit a reimbursement claim for at-home tests for personal use.

Starting Saturday, January 15, 2022, the Biden-Harris Administration is requiring all private health plan insurers to cover the cost of up to eight at-home COVID-19 tests per rolling 30-day period. GEHA will be offering this program to all GEHA medical plan members to improve access to easy-to-use, at-home COVID-19 tests at no cost when the test is purchased at an in-network pharmacy.

How is GEHA covering the at-home COVID-19 tests?

GEHA will cover eight at-home tests per rolling 30-day period for each member, regardless of how many tests are purchased at a time. Members may visit a participating retail network pharmacy (subject to availability and participation) to obtain certain over-the-counter COVID-19 test kits at $0.00 cost using their prescription benefit card. A prescription is not required for the COVID-19 test kit, but the kit must be processed through the pharmacy. Locate an in-network pharmacy here.

If members don't want to visit a pharmacy in person to obtain an over-the-counter COVID-19 test, they can still get reimbursed. Members may purchase a COVID-19 test online and submit for reimbursement through the GEHA prescription benefit. Tests purchased online will be reimbursed up to $12 per test (or the actual price of the test, if less).

Members may purchase a COVID-19 test from a retailer outside of GEHA's preferred pharmacy network. Members should save their receipts and submit for reimbursement through the GEHA prescription benefit. Tests purchased outside GEHA's preferred pharmacy network will be reimbursed up to $12 per test (or the actual price of the test, if less).

How do you receive a COVID-19 at-home test reimbursement?

All members can submit for reimbursement through their prescription benefit by signing in to the portal at Caremark.com with their Username and Password, and submit a claim form. Members who purchased a test prior to Jan. 15, 2022, and had an order from a licensed health care provider, can request reimbursement by submitting a claim form with the receipt and copy of order using the GEHA Medical Claim Form.
