Lactation Support and Counseling
Under the Affordable Care Act, GEHA covers lactation/breastfeeding consultants without a co-pay as long as the services are performed by a provider in GEHA's network.
GEHA urges you to contact your OB office and/or the hospital where you will deliver/your mid-wife for information regarding an experienced breastfeeding consultant. Services are available before delivery, during the maternity stay and after discharge.
If there is not an in-network lactation consultant near you, you might want to check to see if there is an in-network Baby-Friendly Hospital in your area.
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program that was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1991 to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and mother/baby bonding.
- If you are currently receiving services from one of GEHA's in-network lactation professionals, your providers and services will continue without interruption or additional out-of pocket expenses.
- If you receive breastfeeding services from a lactation consultant that is not in GEHA's network, you might be responsible for the cost difference between the out-of-network allowable and the lactation consultant's rate.
If you are unable to find an experienced breast feeding consultant in your area, you may wish to browse the International Lactation Consultant Association website to find a lactation professional in your area. If you are unable to find a baby-friendly designated hospital in your area, you may wish to browse the Baby-Friendly USA website to find one in your area. We cannot guarantee that all will be affiliated with an in-network provider.
