2022 Awards Recognize Exemplary Board Practices Related to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. (October 18, 2022) — GEHA (Government Employees Health Association, Inc., pronounced G.E.H.A.) announced today that it is 1 of 20 boards that has been named as a finalist for the 2022 NACD Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Awards. The awards recognize boards that have improved their governance and created long-term value for corporations by implementing forward-thinking diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) practices.

“At GEHA, we work tirelessly to build and sustain a more inclusive, safe and people-centered future for our employees, our members and the communities in which they live. We are dedicated to advancing education, energizing our culture and igniting innovation to strengthen our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion,” said GEHA President & CEO Arthur A. Nizza, DSW. “We are truly honored by this designation and know this achievement could not have been accomplished without organization-wide support, including from our board of directors.”

GEHA has long championed diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace, workforce, marketplace and community. The DE&I strategy in place at GEHA is intentionally designed to drive actionable change and accountability by creating opportunities for transparent and honest conversations that represent GEHA employees' perspectives, ideas and backgrounds.

“Our Board of Directors has been very intentional in our efforts to guide and counsel GEHA leaders to make diversity, equity and inclusion a strategic priority for the company,” said GEHA Board Chairperson Steve Weber. “We challenge and encourage the organization to make decisions through a lens that elevates diversity issues to the forefront, and we are proud of the strides GEHA has made on behalf of its members and employees as a result.”

GEHA has offered a variety of DE&I programming that creates a forum for difficult but necessary conversations such as race in the workplace, LGBTQ+ experiences, AAPI allyship, intersectionality and Latinx and Native American identities. The sustained commitment by GEHA supported by its board of directors extends beyond its 1,600 employees to the more than 2 million federal employees and retirees, military retirees and their families, which GEHA serves.

“GEHA has worked to achieve great strides in creating an equitable boardroom,” said NACD president and CEO Peter Gleason. “NACD is proud to honor GEHA for advancing DE&I in their boardroom and throughout their organization.”

Winners will be announced at the NACD DE&I Awards Gala at Gotham Hall in New York City on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022.
