Don’t wait until it’s too late – schedule a physical today

G.E.H.A | June 18, 2025

What men should know about preventive care and physical exams.

Regular doctor visits can help prevent future health problems.

Not a fan of doctor visits? You’re not alone. A 2019 survey revealed 72% of men would rather mow the lawn or clean the bathroom than go to the doctor. And even when they do make an appointment, some hesitate to be honest about their health. But skipping preventive care can carry real risks, especially for conditions like high blood pressure or high cholesterol, which often show no early symptoms.

A physical is one of the simplest steps men can take to protect their long-term health. Physicians recommend men get a routine physical exam every other year once they turn 18, then move to an annual physical starting in their 40s. This exam includes:

  • Blood pressure check
  • Cholesterol screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Immunization screening
  • Preventive cancer screening
  • Testicular and prostate exam

Your doctor may also:

  • Review your current medications and potential drug interactions
  • Ask about emotional health, diet, exercise, alcohol use and tobacco use
  • Discuss family history and your risk for certain conditions

Your physical is an excellent opportunity for you to bring up any questions you may have about your health. It’s helpful to come prepared with a list.

Over time, the information collected during physical exams becomes a key part of your personal health history. When performed regularly, these checkups help your doctor identify trends, catch problems early and create a plan for ongoing care.
